Malawi (Tiyeni) - Flagship Project

Malawi - Tiyeni : Supporting innovation for lasting improvements in food supply for poor communities

Enabling Tiyeni to embed improved and environmentally sustainable methods of farming

Tiyeni promotes the deep bed farming (DBF) technique, a method that is having stunning results wherever it is operated in Malawi. Soil erosion is minimised and agricultural yields improve dramatically

Stunted maize corn is the product of soil erosion, insufficient nutrients and water run-off before it can sink into the plant’s roots

Breaking up the hard-pan: intensive work is a prerequisite for the DBF method

Chitheka: almost three hours drive from the main road on rough tracks, where villagers have recently adopted the DBF method

Chitheka: a big welcome for new arrivals!

Jackson and Florence, two adopters of DBF had to repeat their hard work as the first attempt to break up of the hardpan was not deep enough.

Tiyeni’s best results in Malawi: in Chitheka DBF has proved hugely successful with average yields per acre increasing from 2 tonnes to almost 10 tonnes after DBF was adopted
