Malawi - Pump Aid: Supporting innovation for lasting improvements in water supply for poor communities

In June 2019, Clive Bailey and Adam Leach visited two of ABF’s Flagship Projects in Malawi to learn more about what is being achieved for vulnerable people.

Supporting Pump Aid to deliver economically sustainable access to safe and clean water

Pump Aid provides water pumps to villages in Malawi. Unlike other NGOs, Pump Aid charges for the pumps and reliable after sales service. This aims to increase a sense of ‘ownership’ in village communities and to ensure that the pumps are cared for, last longer, and are used productively

Newly installed village community pumps save hours and effort for women bringing water close to home. Instead of walking for several miles time can be used for household needs and education. Cleaner water means better health and less disease

Improved agricultural water pumps replace older models to deliver reliable water supply, enabling cash crops to be grown and sold in local markets earning villagers cash and savings

With these pumps, villagers now have more reliable and clean water – improving health, time is saved and earn a small cash surplus that equip families with more resources to support their children’s education and their own wellbeing
